Bhaat (Rice) and Dal
Ingredients:
- Basmait rice 2 cups
- Water 3 lts
Procedure:
- Soak rice grains for about 30 minutes in cold water.
- Boil 3 lts of water in a pot or sauce-pan.
- Add rice grains in boiling water.
- Wait till rice and water starts boiling, then lower the heat.
- Cook for about 10-12 minutes or till the rice is done.
- Drain excess water by pouring the whole mixture in colander.
- Wait for 5 minutes, till all the water has been drained out.
- Pour the boiled rice in a serving bowl.
Tips:
You may add 2 tps of veg oil in the water for cooking rice so that the rice grains get separated.
Preparation of Dal
Ingredients:
- Yellow Dal (Chana) 1 cup
- Cumin seeds 1 tsp
- Red chili whole 1 No
- Bay leaf 1 No
- Turmeric powder ½ tsp
- Green chili 2 Nos
- Veg oil 1 ½ tbs
- Salt
- Sugar ½ tsp
- Water 2 cups
Procedure:
- Soak the Dal for about 15-20 minutes.
- Boil the water in a pressure cooker (or sauce-pan).
- Add ½ tsp of cooking oil, pinch of salt, turmeric powder.
- Add Dal and cook for 10 minutes in the pressure cooker (or 30 minutes in a sauce-pan).
- Heat rest of the oil in a wok.
- Lower heat, add cumin seeds, whole red chili and the bay leaf – fry till aroma comes out.
- Add the cooked Dal to the spices.
- Simmer for 2 minutes.
- Add more salt if needed.
- Add sugar.
- Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour in a serving bowl.
- Decorate with whole green chili.
Tips:
- If you use sauce-pan for boiling the Dal, you will need 4 cups of water instead of 2 cups.
- Arhar dal can be cooked similarly, but it will take less time to cook.
- You may add chopped fresh coriander leaves for decoratation.
